Within the Sovereign Bodies series, this photograph explores the body as a site of private experience, vulnerability, and resistance to the expectations of purity and control. Set within the sterile familiarity of a bathroom, the figure occupies a space that is both intimate and profoundly exposed. The stark white surroundings and clothing become a kind of cultural expectation—the ideal of cleanliness, femininity, and bodily restraint—while the vivid red staining refuses that ideal. Whether read as menstrual blood, injury, ritual, or something deliberately ambiguous, the red becomes an assertion of the body’s physical reality. Rather than presenting the female body as something to be perfected, concealed, or made comfortable for the viewer, Sovereign Bodies allows it to exist on its own terms: messy, powerful, vulnerable, and unapologetically sovereign. This photograph was part of the Electron Salon exhibition at the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art, September 2027. Kira was the model for this set.
